    And from election Twitterers...

    5:20am:

jrobelen: Obama is showing us he'll be ready to lead on Day One. How was there ever any doubt?

pjmartin: A wonderful night for the USA and for the rest of us. Obama wins; McCain concedes graciously.

pinkimartini: it is cute that the obama girls will finally get their puppy...

fiercecupcake: President-elect Obama and Michelle are gonna have great post-election sex, you can tell. <ahem - Ed>

Rolling_Stone: McCain’s Grand Speech: Lord knows I’ve been a critic of John McCain, but that concession...

bitterresentful: Don't come crying to me when you realize voting for Obama was a bad choice. I'm only going to say I told you so.

Bryan_Taylor: I pray the words we heard this historic night from McCain and Obama will translate into the cooperative action our country desperately needs

That's it from me (probably). Handing over to our esteemed Washington-based Campaign Tales blogger, Elaine Monaghan.

I am a Muslim, born and bred in the UK and will say that the term "Paki" is usually intended derogatorily, dependent upon who's saying it and how he said it. I saw the footage of Harry calling him a paki and did not detect a racial tone in the way he said it. If I am honest, it sounded like he said it spontaneously, not because he wanted to be your typical British soldier you see in the movies, happy to have left a pompously boring royal life so he wanted to show he does have a wild side to him. Some argue and say that Ahmed didn’t hear it because of the distance between them. But did he hear it? He knew of it later and said nothing about it, probably under the impression that it’s military and it’s in the norm for people of all races to be treated that way by their superiors. It was only until his parents knew of it the issue was raised. Would he have called him a paki if he didn't know him? Did he know him? I don't know. Maybe he did and maybe he didn’t. But that’s not the issue here or the complaint at hand. If it had been any other soldier holding Harry's rank at the time who called it him, would it have gone as far as it's got to today? I doubt very much. It's only gone as far as it has because Harry holds the title "Prince" to his name and is a member of the Royal family. This incident happened in 2006 and we are now in 2009. Please explain why wasn’t it filed earlier and only come to light now? What if the soldier was Chinese and Harry said our "Chink" friend Ling, for example or a Frenchman and he said our “frog" friend Pierre or any other race with a similar statement, would people have made a song and dance about it and taken it to the level it has ridiculously reached? It's all about intention and it was clear from the footage, he said it in jest. No one can open up his heart, look inside it and say he said it racially because he is a racist. Have we ever known him, prior to this make similar statements about any other person? Have any complaints of a similar nature been attributed to him? What exactly do Ahmed's parents want an apology for? Why did his parents complain and not Ahmed himself? Has anybody, Ahmed himself, his parents or Harry’s superiors asked him why he called him a paki? Why say he meant this when he might not have done. Isn’t this oppression? You could ruin someone’s life over something so trivial all because you have convinced yourself what you believe is a fact, without an iota of evidence when in actuality it is far from the truth. Harry is a human being like every human being on the planet. He is not perfect and he will make mistakes. Is he not allowed to err because he is a Prince? Any Muslim who claims he fears Allah as He should be feared and believes in the last day should speak the truth no matter what, even against himself and any sound minded individual, non Muslim for that matter speaking who claims he is rational should also be honest. To deliberately tarnish Harry’s name for a word that emanated his mouth, intentionally or intentionally is wrong, morally and ethically. Only Harry himself knew his intentions behind saying it and if it was meant racially, we will never know and that is between him and God. Harry has since apologised, not because he had a guilty conscience because he said it maliciously, he apologised because of who he is and the family he belongs to. He may have acknowledged he was wrong but that doesn’t mean a person should be labelled as a racist because of one slip of the tongue. Even though he apologised, Ahmed’s father said he could not accept the apology and insisted he apologise to the Islamabad government. What for? Did he call the members of the Islamabad government pakis? It looks like Ahmed’s father has found an opportunity to benefit from this, which I sincerely hope this is not the case. Do not be surprised if people start questioning Ahmed’s father’s intentions, not Harry’s. I am not sticking up for Harry or against Ahmed and his parents and vice versa. I speak only the truth and expect people to do exactly the same. We have issues in the world so much greater than this to concentrate on and more of a priority to be raised and solved that we should be ashamed of ourselves for allowing something as petty as this, compared to the world’s problems, become more important to us.
