Could Osborne topple the new Tories?

    What’s happening:

Shadow Chancellor George Osborne – the third most powerful Tory in the country – stands accused of soliciting illegal donations from one of Russia’s richest men during a ‘private party’, with Peter Mandelson, aboard the oligarch’s yacht.

    What people are saying:

The allegation was made by wealthy fund manager Nathaniel Rothschild, whose mansion Osborne was staying in at the time. Rothschild says his former Bullingdon Club chum, along with the Conservatives’ fundraiser, conspired to solicit cash from the oligarch – a move banned by British law because the ‘donor’ is a foreign citizen. Osborne has denied any impropriety:  “I want to make it absolutely clear that we neither asked for money nor did we receive money,” he told reporters outside Conservative party headquarters in London, although another witness has since been named.

Why we should give a damn:

At a time when David Cameron’s new Tories are trying to reposition themselves as the party of the people, images of ministers rubbing shoulders with billionaires on superyachts – coupled with reminders of their elitist upbringing – threaten to undermine the Conservatives’ claims that they’re in touch with the common people, warns The Times’ Alice Miles. Not so, counters the Guardian’s Tim Montgomerie, who insists the hype is indicative of nothing more than Labour’s hatred of Osborne.

In response to Justin's comments to my blog below. Yes you are right that new labour abandoned many of the traditional principles of Labour  in order to 'modernise and become electable' and I amongst many other Labour supporters reluctlently accepted that this was required to keep the other levers of power (the media, the city , the IMF, global investment Davros attendees, the CBI, the IOD and others) onside ie retain the 'electable' tag rather than have the media dogs set on them from  day one and have to weather continuous critical propaganda  which would turn support away from them (as is deliberately being done now - see the story re  Cameron secretly meeting MURDOCH at the moment) and read between the lines when u look at press and tv coverage at the moment. I personally found it an affront  that Tony Blair had to do the same thing in 1997 in order to buy in Murdoch's support then - who the f**k does that Aussie fascist bas*d think he is trying to subvert our political system on a regular basis over the last thirty odd years it's almost as if the contenders for power have to pay homage to this creep in a way that is not even reserved for the Queen prior to forming a government -what do we have here a democracy or an oligarchy ? Justin do u think this is a satisfactory state of affairs ?

Now for the failings of New Labour :-

    1) New labour has probably spent more time managingthe country on the basis of news coverage than in actively pursuing its own objectives (knee jerk reactions to press sentiment, spin doctoring etc.. ), and for this it has rightly been criticised as it has seemingly found itself unable to clip the wings of the Murdoch empire in the interests of democracy of opinion and fair representation of the facts displayed within our media.   Do u think the Tories will do anything different or even be interested in reforming this aspect of the UK's political system or is it more likely they can reasonably expect an easy ride from the Murdoch press because of their closer  political beliefs and therefore wouldn't dream of taking any such steps - whether it was better for us as a democracy or not (equation works - good for the Tories then that's all that matters) ?

    2) Blair took us to war in Iraq on the coattails of US policy ! Major mistake supporting unconditionally an understandably belligerent Republican American administration looking around for someone to take revenge on for the terrible atrocities commited on 911. Ever since Churchill established the 'special relationship' with the US in the 40's and 50's successive prime ministers (with one exception - Harold Wilson refused to get us invoved in Vietnam)  have toed that line with disastrous consequences on some occasions and as  we can all see to our embarrasment  how humiliatingly one-sided that relationship has been (re Suez et al, gulf war I and the current debacle); but would a Tory administration done anything different  - I doubt it especially with Maggie there to jog their arm.
The fact that Blair was so keen to support this war in the teeth of public opposition is incredible reckless and has indeed damaged Labour's electoral chances - why a labour leader would support a reactionary and seemingly out of control Republican caucus with such vigour is perplexing - considering Wilson's response a generation before - is inexplicable other than Tony has always really been a closet tory (indeed he claims to be an admirer of Maggie - please tell me why u admire her for Gods's sake Tony and u Gordon - or is it just to not rock Murdoch's boat again that you utter such sh**e).

    3) Continuing the privatisation mantra and extending it with PFI. Just how much more evidence do we need to see  the utter failure of this Thatcher inspired revolution. Our strategic control of the most basic parts of our economy has been stripped from us as we have opened up our economy to all comers with a zealot's belief that this is the way forward. In fact we are rapidly becoming like some banana republic where the price for everything we have to pay for and the prices we may charge for anything we may produce is outside of our control now increasingly in foreign hands - yet u notice how many people are still bleating to the government about the huge hikes in energy recently as though the government can do anything about these privately owned assets - but u can be sure that the EDF's of this world cannot behave like they do here in their home countries, where the state has prudently maintained a sufficiently large ownership or indeed continued state ownership in order to have influence and control.
How about corporate Britain; how are they doing since Thatcher gave them 'the right to manage'. Well not to well really They've with a few exceptions allowed them selves to be taken over by foreign competitors or settled for the welfare handouts of government PFI projects and now increasingly juicy contracts to run whole sections of government itself (rather poorly and at extortionate prices); rather than do the difficult task of going out and winning real business in the real world. Indeed one woders why there is a civil service or councils involved at all if they're just there to rubberstamp their corporate suppliers needs in a very hands-off manner.

Other than the above along with city deregulation ( all tory inspired and originated policies that New Labour has mistakenly embraced as the way forward) New Labour has achieved some good things:- in education, health and infrastructure there has been strong and steady investment leading to noticeable improvements (leaving the parting bequeath of the last tory administration - the catastrophe of the railways oiut of the equation). Even the buses in London run largely on time  (thjanks to Mr Prescott and his transport initiatives). And let's not forget not a single recession in 11 years of rule till now, compared to the Tories 3 recessions in 18 years which have largely caused a lot of the social problems we have inherited today; and to think the first one was deliberately created by the Tory administrration chance llor Geoffrey Howe under Thatcher's direction - which is why I label them as traitors (deliberately harming your economy for nefatrious political reasons/zealous exercising  untried theory - is to my mind atraitorous act).

So Justin I am not naive I fully understand that it is not only one party that  can be corrupt/stupid and that party funding issues are a grey murky area; but in the biggerpicture the tories are really bad news and Labour even New is infinitely better. One lives in hope they regain their socialist rootsand have the strength to takle action once again in the national interests  instead of trying to out-Tory the tories.

With the shambles that the defunct right-wing ideas of the last 28 years has now proven to be with the current complete crash; there is no better time than now to re-define a new politics that serves the nation as a whoile and not just some special interest groups and elites, and can see-thru sham miracles like 'globalisation' and not loose sight of the fact that we are a world of cooperating/competing nation states with different cultures and needs and always will be.

    Thanks for the debate

PS I don't dislike toffs blanketly at all  - just snakes in suits who believe mischievous lying is all part of being a winner. Cos we need strong brave leaders who can face upto and speak the truth not yet another charismatic wanky winner. As Richard Branson once said 'You don't need to be a bas*tard to succeed in business, in fact most basta*rds eventually fail'. Never a truer word said !!

PPS for those of you  out there that believe Mr Osbourne (tory shadow chancellor whom this blog started with) and Cameron - that the biggest financial meltdown and economic recession the world has ever seen is the personal responsibility of Gordon Brown and this government - you really need to go back to school, learn how to read beyond a football game result or the latest celeb gossip magasine, try picking up some reputable history books engage your brain and thgink not once but a few times about all the things that are going on and then make a reasoned sensible comment; otherwise if that's too onerous, just accept you are a sheep and go back to your grazing OK !!

Oh please!!, compared to the whole of this lying corrupt bunch of lowlifes in this current government, George Osbourne is whiter than Snow White! This is yet another pathetic attempt by labour to divert attention from the horrendous mess up they have made of running the country. Lets not forget, when labour came to power they inherited a very stable economy. Gordon brown, when chancellor,(he probably still is!) sold off Britains gold reserves for a fraction of their worth, ruined the pensions system and destroyed people's lives. Now that his sheer incompetence has come back to haunt him, he will do absolutely anything to blame anyone except himself!
