Speaker Michael Martin quits "to maintain unity"

    What’s happening?

Michael Martin has resigned as Speaker of the House of Commons over the MPs’ expenses scandal – the most high-profile victim of the crisis and the first speaker to be forced from office in more than 300 years. Twenty-three MPs signed a motion calling for him to step down for his role in trying to keep parliamentary expenses secret. When campaigners first tried to uncover details under the freedom of information act, the Commons Commission – of which Martin was chair – fought the case in the high court. It eventually lost and agreed to publish details later this year. When the Daily Telegraph published leaked claims, however, Martin drew further criticism by calling for a police investigation.

    What are people saying?

Addressing the House of Commons at 2:30pm today, Martin spoke only briefly to confirm he would stand down on June 21 “in order that unity can be maintained” in the House. After the announcement, Tory MP Douglas Carswell told BBC News: “The key is that the next speaker owes their position to the legislature as a whole. There is a duty to create a House of Commons that works. Changing the speaker is the beginning of a far-reaching process of reform.” Labour MP Sir Stuart Bell, a close ally of Martin, said: “He paid a heavy price for trying to be an establishment figure when the establishment was corrupt.” Angus Robertson, leader of the SNP in Westminster, reiterated calls for a general election. “This is a much bigger problem than one person,” he said. Harriet Harman, leader of the House, described the decision as “an act of great generosity to the House of Commons that MPs from all parties will respect.”

Why should we give a damn?

Some say Martin’s departure will herald the beginning of the end of the current crisis gripping Westminster; others say the issue of how to restore public faith in politics is yet to be resolved. Blogger Guido Fawkes describes Martin as “one of the most outrageous examples of personal enrichment at the public’s expense while pretending to be a public servant.” Guardian political commentator Michael White disagrees: “It is wrong to blame him for the decay of parliament; he has been a symptom, not the cause.” Either way, the move is expected to pave the way for a radical reform of parliament. Senior Labour MP Sir Stuart Bell told the Press Association: “I can tell you the Cabinet... will approve a series of reforms which will place the House of Commons in the hands of independent regulators rather than the House itself. The nature of the role of the speaker will change. There will no longer be a speaker who is in charge as chief executive. He will be procedural and ceremonial.”

Will that be enough to clean up Westminster? Your thoughts...

One cannot say that every MP is on the take but, the fact is that this has been going on for years and years among a majority of our MP's It is clear that the sums of money being paid back is but a small part of what has been stolen from the taxes paid by hardworking people of this nation. I do not think that they still understand or want to accept that they have done wrong, if not by their self made rules but morally. These porkers who have had their snouts in the trough are standing down at the next election, yes, but will still collect a salary which they don't deserve until and, will no doubt still be able to collect their inflated pensions. Remember that these are the people who lined up to criticise the £700000 pension given to a chief executive who ran a bank into the ground, they have ruined the democratic process in our country. Every MP who has abused the system for personal greed should be thrown out of parliament with the loss of their full pension rights. Although one can almost guarantee that we have been stitched up there too. We should also remember that other issues surrounding this lame duck goverment are the number of Quangos set up to give well paid jobs to croanies. The amount of money spent in this way may very well be greater than that exposed by the current scandal. In my view MP's should be reminded that they are servants of the public and not the other way round. No MP should have interests in other things, their role is to serve us the people, other interest can only be a distraction from this role. We can never trust these people again, we need a General Election now. I have for many years refered to our goverments as democratic dictatorships, telling us what we want to hear if elected and then, become corrupted by the system and end up telling us what is good for us. Is that democracy?
Our next target should be the MEP's because in many ways they are worse, by signing in each they can then go off to do their own thing, some representation that is! The gravy train just goes on and on, all the time ruining our country and lining pockets.
Our next home government must give us the vote on the Lisbon Treaty, we must be given our democratic right to determine our european destiny. When I voted many years ago for the EC it was as a trading partner not political integration, we were conned as much then as we are now. God help us

Of course Mrtin's resignation will not make any difference - this is just a smokescreen thrown up by MP's to divert attention from the real issue of immoral expense claims. What MP's don't seem to understand that thaere is a moral dimension to what anyone should claim for, the spirit rather than the letter of the allowance rules. This is nothing to do with any particular party, it is the greedy individuals of all parties who are the offenders. There have git to be rules which allow the bare minimum to be claimed. Sto this "second home" farce for a start. A basic "working away from home" expense based on mid-range up to £50 per night, will provide all the comfort anyone needs. If it is good enough for us common people, then it is good enough for MP's. If they need staff, let them use the job centres to give work to people who need it, a ban on employing relatives. I could go on, but let's get some common sense and decency into the system.

Might be an idea to let the lesser criminals out of jail, roughly 670 of them, give all mP's a double or triple cell, keep them there until 2012, and let them live at the olympic village once the games are over, Don't forget though, deselect yours, and we might just about find some 'honest' ones, how about interviewing the 670 early releases. Yes, look back over 4 years, and take into account those who have resigned, left, Bush's poodles, and any one who might justly be accused of Iraqi war crimes

So one of the thieves has quit and gone to ground whilist the rest stay in their jobs and brazenly continue to take a salary also paid for from public taxes. Starting at the top, the unelected leader of England " Brown" what is he doing refusing to allow a vote by the people in England so that we can remove this unlelected dishonest buffoon? They must all be invesitgated and appropriate criminal charges made as to befit the level of thievery that each dishonest politician indulged in. If we the people steal from the public purse we are charged as criminals, tried and punished. The world is shocked and laughs at us the public in England because we tolerate this nonsense. These people knew full well they were indulging in a "dusguised" form of stealing and that alone is enough to clearly show they "must" not continue in positions of power and public trust. If the so called royals really do care about we the people that ensure their lazy pampered way of life then they should lead a public outcry to punish, remove and replace those that have lied and stolen from us. We cannot point the finger at dishonest regimes around the globe when our own leaders have shown how dishonest they are. The people deserve honest sincere and truthful leaders that really do work for the public. Investigate them all, cease making excuses, criminally charge them and get some decent honest leaders at the helm of our country.

What concerns me is the absence of Tony Blairs name in the list of offenders. To be in a position to purchase a house in Connaugth Square obviously must have been due misuse of the expenses system. I sincerely hope he is going to be checked out and outed. His demise from being Prime Minister seems to have been somewhat timely - the recession and now the expenses fiasco. I believe that he got out before the proverbial "DO DO" hit the fan

Martin has been used as a scapegoat. End of. They are getting rid of him, yet how many MPs owe him something for covering up their theft for so long, as well as his. That's all this is, theft. If anyone else committed tax fraud, we would be jailed. But no, these people are above the law it seems and aren't even going to pay back all of what they stole. For example, the MP couple who were claiming for the same things, thus getting double the amount: HOW IS IT NOT THEFT WHEN YOU ARE TAKING MONEY THAT YOU KNOW IS NOT YOURS? Also, using our money for kitkats and tampons? Hold on, everyone has to get stuff like that why the hell is that on the expenses?
They are all theiving bas***** who are trying to cover up the mess and apologise now that is has been discovered. I will never trust them as long as they allow no justice to take place.
